Arthur Danahar (Bethnal Green)

Born: 02/06/1918, Bethnal Green, London

Died: 23/11/1992

Arthur Danahar

Arthur was the most talented of the famous Danahar fighting family. He won the 1937 ABA lightweight title, turned pro the following year and scored 14 straight wins before challenging for the British lightweight crown in February 1939. The match, which pitched super-stylist Danahar against the ferocious, all-action Eric Boon, was a mouth-watering prospect that exceeded expectations. Danahar was stopped in the fourteenth round of what turned out to be one of the most exciting British title showdowns ever. It was also the first televised British title fight.

Notwithstanding this early defeat, Danahar went on to amass an extraordinary record, beating Ernie Roderick, Jack Kid Berg, Harry Mizler, Norman Snow, Eric Boon himself and many more. But in spite of so many brilliant wins, Danahar never won a national title. He was Southern Area welterweight champion and lost to Ernie Roderick in a 1941 British welterweight title challenge.

A boxing wizard, Danahar would have virtually been assured a British title had he not boxed at a time when the lightweight and welterweight ranks teemed with exceptional talent.
